Alappuzha is one of the most important tourist centres in Kerala. This coastal town has long beach and surrounded by number of canals and lakes. The largest Vembanad Lake and Kayamkulam Lake are ideal for backwaters touring and transport. Alappuzha is also famous for its spectacular annual event, the Nehru Boat Race. It is also a centre for coir and carpet industries.
The presiding deity here is Goddess Rajarajeswari and it is located at the heart of the town. Navarathri is an important festival and colorful procession of elephants are conducted during the last two days of Navarathri.
The most important tourist event in Alappuzha is Nehru Trophy Boat Race. It was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1952 on the occasion of his visit to Alappuzha. It is organized on the second Saturday of August every year, in which 130 feet long snake boats, each manned by over a hundreds of rowers, race through backwaters at high speed and cheered by the spectators throughout its course.
Allappuzha is world famous for its Snake Boat Race. Boat Races usually take place at the time of Onam festival.
Some of the important boat races are:
1. Nehru Trophy Boat Race (2nd Saturday of August)
2. Payippad Jalotsavam (4th Onam Day)
3. Champakulam Moolam Boat Race (July)
Chakkulathukavu Sri Bhagavathi Amman temple is situated 10 km from Tiruvalla.
It is famous for its Krishna Temple built with Kerala architectural style. It is also famous for its Palpayasam a milk porridge of exceptional sweetness.
This is one of the most popular picnic spots in Aleppey. The pier, which extends into the sea here, is over 137 years old. There is also an old lighthouse, which is greatly fascinating to visitors.
This area is very famous for its backwaters and you can have very beautiful scenes of paddy fields. This is one of the places in the world where farming is done below sea level.
The backwater touring is an another landmark of Kerala. The Alappuzha to Kollam backwater trip by boat is one of the highlights and unforgettable event for the visitors to Kerala. It takes you across the palm fringed lakes studded with cantilever Chinese fishing nets and narrow canals where on either side filled with scenic beauty. Krishnapuram Palace, the centre of attraction here was built by Marthanda Varma, the King of Travancore during the 18th century. It contains one of the largest mural paintings in Kerala called the Gajendra Moksham Measures 14 feet by 11 feet. The palace also has a museum of antique sculptures, paintings and bronzes.
This famous Sri Nagaraja Temple is dedicated to the King of Serpents. It is situated near Haripad, amidst the thick forest.
It is a beautiful small island in the Vembanad lake. It can be reached only by boat from Kumarakom and Muhamma.
Air: The nearest Airport is at Kochi and connected by daily flights to all important cities.
Rail: Alappuzha is connected by Rail with state capital and other parts of the state.
Road: National Highway No.47 is passing through this city and easily accessible from all parts of the country.
