Cochin - 'Queen of the Arabian' Sea is the commercial capital of Kerala. Cochin has one of the finest natural harbors in the world. Cochin was once the major center of commerce and trade with the British, Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch etc.
Bolgatty is the most beautiful among the all islands in the district. The Bolgatty Palace which was built in 1744 is situated here, but now it is converted as a hotel which is managed by KTDC.
At the entrance of the Harbour, fishing nets provide a fascinating sight and it can be seen along the backwaters. It is believed that they have been brought to Kerala by the Chinese traders.
It is the biggest ship-building yard in India. Set up with Japanese collaboration, it has a Building dock and a Repair dock.
It is an archaeological museum having the collection of 19th century oil paintings, pre-historic monuments, old coins, stone sculptures and copies of mural paintings.
A famous Protestant church which was built by Portuguese in 1510 AD is considered to be the first church built by Europeans in India. Vasco-da-Gama was buried here. It is situated in Fort Kochi.
It is a man made island, created from the materials dredged while deepening the Port. Named after the Lord Willingdon, the British viceroy of India. It is situated between Ernakulam and Kochi & Mattancherry and separated by backwaters. Kochi Airport is situated on this island and some of the best Hotels, tourist Office, Customs house and Naval headquarters are sited here.
It is a pilgrim centre and lies on the bank of Periyar river. The river is ideal for bathing and the annual Sivarathri festival is held on the banks of the river.
It was built by Portuguese and presented to Cochin Raja in 1555. It acquired its present name after 1633, when the Dutch carried out extensive repairs in the Palace. It also contains a Hindu temple in it.
It was built in 1568 and it has the ancient scrolls of the Old Testament and copper plates, in which the grants of privilege made rules of Kochi were recorded and there are interesting Chinese paintings on tiles.
This museum has the collection of Kochi Royal family such as King's Throne, paintings, carvings and samples of Epigraphy. It is also known for nearby Chottanikara Temple.
It is the birth place of Adi Snakaracharya the Great Indian Philosopher of the 8th century. There are two shrines- one dedicated to him as Dakshnamurthy and the other to the Goddess Sharadha which are maintained by Sringeri Mutt. There is also a place within the premises called Brindavan where Aryamba, the mother of Sankaracharya was cremated.
There is a famous catholic church situated on a hillock. It is dedicated to St. Thomas.
The famous Museum of Kerala History is situated here. It has several paintings and life-size status of famous persons depicting Kerala history. The statue of Parasuramar, who is said to have created Kerala, greets the visitor in front of the museum. The history of Kerala for the last 2000 years is narrated by light and sound show.
It is an important centre for orthodox Syrian Christians. The St. Mary's Church, one of the ancient churches in Kerala is situated here.
The island can be reached only by boat from Kochi. There is a Portuguese fort at the northern end of Pallipuram. The Vypin lighthouse is at Ochanthuthi.
Kodanad is one the largest elephant training centers in South India.
The cascading falls are enriched with scenic beauty and is an ideal picnic spot.
Kochi and Ernakulam can also be reached by boat through backwaters, from the main boat jetty at Park Avenue, Ernakulam.
Air: Kochi is an International airport and connected with important cities of Gulf countries besides the domestic services in our country.
Rail: Ernakulam has two Railway Stations. Both Kochi and Ernakulam are directly connected to the State capital and other parts of the country.
Road: National Highway No.47 is passing through this city and is accessible from all parts of the country.
