The Kottayam district is bordering palm-fringed backwaters with net-work of canals and rivers on the west and majestic western ghats on the east. Kumarakom: 16 kms from Kottyam, Kumarakom is a small backwater town.

It is a small church near the Valiapalli built in 1579 A.D. It has some murals and painting depicting Biblical and other themes.

Ettumanur is famous for its ancient Siva temple. The Siva temple has exquisite mural paintings and sculptures depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The annual celebration takes place for 10 days during Feb/March.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

The Sanctuary which is situated on the banks of Vembanad Lake is famous for its local varieties like water fowl, water duck and migratory Siberian storks. There is also a tourist complex in it and KTDC offers backwater cruises in the Vembanad Lake.

It is an important pilgrim centre for Syrian Christians. St.Joseph Press, which was established in 1844, the oldest printing press in Kerala is situated in this town.

Maramala Waterfalls

It is situated 7km from the Teekoy rubber estate. The waterfall is about 60 meters in height.

vaikam

VAIKAM

Vaikam got prominence when the famous satyagraha was staged in 1925 blessed by Mahatma Gandhi for the admission of Harijans into the temple. Vaikam is also famous for the Siva temple, which is considered to have built by Parasuramar the mythological creator of Kerala.
