Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala state is a beautiful city. The famous Sri.Padmanabhaswamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu is the land mark of the city. The city was named after Anantha, the thousand-headed Serpent of the Hindu mythology.
The district is bounded by western gnats on the east and north, the fertile Kanniyakumari district of Tamil Nadu on south and Arabian Sea on west.
The sprawling city has massive buildings, old and lovely ancestral and traditional buildings with Kerala architecture and a long sea coast which provide an excellent base to explore the interiors of Kerala.
Scores of women devotees, armed with earthen pots, firewood and bricks with which they set up hearths and observe Pongala which involves preparation of Payasam. The 10-day ritual takes place in March every year. It is officially recognized as the largest congregation of women, who throng from all over the world and entered the Guinness Book of Records.
It was formerly known as "Napier Museum" named after former Madras Governor General, John Napier. Within it there is unique architectural beauty with traditional Kerala style in addition to the influence of Mughal and Chinese style. It has an excellent collection of historical ornaments, bronze images and ivory carvings.
Established in 1980, the museum has a wide range of objects like dolls colleted from all over the world. There is also a mini aquarium within the Museum.
This Observatory is one of the oldest in India, situated on top of a hill near museum. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, one can get a bird's eye view of the city from here.

It is a popular palm-fringed beach adjacent to the airport. An indoor recreation club, children's traffic training park are added attraction on this beach.
This ancient imposing temple is the most impressive land mark in the city. Built in 16th century and later renovated by the Maharaja of Travancore in 1733, the 7 storey gopuram is an excellent example of Dravididian archirecture. The presiding deity is Lord Vishnu reclining on Anantha, the thousand-headed Serpent. The idol is 18 feet long and can be worshiped through three doors. There are innumerable stone pillars with intricate carvings and covered with gold in the temple corridors. Mural paintings and ornamentation adorn the walls. Only Hondus are allowed to enter the temple with strict dress regulation.
It has a rich collection of the Kerala's favourite artist Raja Varma. It also has the collection of worked by Russian emigrant Roerich. Copies of Rajput and Mughal paintings, works from the Tanjore School of Art, and copies of paintings from Ajanta Caves besides some collection of miniature paintings from China, Jappan and Tibet.
It is tourist village near the airport and an ideal picnic spot, where the large lake merges with the sea by a narrow sandbar. There is a floating bridge and a floating restaurant. Facilities for boating and other water-sport activities are available. An open air theatre serves as a centre for cultural performance with the ocean at the background. It provides an exciting entertainment for tourists.
The Zoo which forms a part of Boatanical Gardens is one of the oldest in the country. It was established in 1859. It has a large collection of animals from abroad also. The beautiful landscape of the garden and lake provide the natural habitat for the animals. There is also an aquarium nearby, worth visiting.

Aruvikkara This famous pilgrim centre surrounded by beautiful scenery and has an ancient bhagavathi Temple built on a rock. It is dedicated to Goddess Durga. It is situated on the bank of the river Karamana, which is filled with large number of fishes which are fed by the devotees.
India's most spectacular beach resort with boundless blue of the Arabian sea and vast stretches of golden sands curves into an arc on one side and with never ending spread of coconut palm on the other side have made this, an internationally known famous beach resort. This coastal town is famous for its ancient Janardhanaswammy Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is a pilgrimage centre for the Hindus who worship at the temple and to pay homage to Sree Narayana Guru, the Kerala's saint and social reformer. It is also a holy beach known as Papanashini.
It is an fishing port near Kovalam and also a important historic place. There is a rock temple which belongs to 8th century and this protected monument comes under the Archaeological Survey of India.

Rail: It is an important Rail terminus and well connected by express trains to all major towns of the country.
Road: National Highway No.47 passes through this town and has a good network of road, linking the city with other parts of the country.
